How to Get Your YouTube Livestream URL and Stream Key

Setting up a YouTube livestream requires two essential pieces of information: your stream URL and stream key. This guide will walk you through the process of obtaining these and getting started with YouTube livestreaming.

Requirements

  • YouTube requires phone number verification. After 24 hours, you can start livestreaming.
  • To verify, go to YouTube > Settings > Channel Options > Feature eligibility > expand Intermediate features > Verify phone number.
  • Activate 24-hour countdown by attempting to go live. To do this, go to YouTube homepage, click Create > Go live.
  • YouTube has no stream duration limit. But, they will only archive streams under 12 hours.

Getting Your Stream URL and Key

  1. Go to YouTube

    Visit youtube.com and sign in to your account.

  2. Create > Go live

    Click on "Create" and then select "Go live" from the dropdown menu.

  3. Create a New Stream

    Click on "New Stream" or "Create Stream" button.

  4. Configure Stream Settings
    Fill in your stream details:
    • Title for your stream
    • Description
    • Privacy settings
    • Category
  5. Get Stream URL and Key
    In the stream settings, you'll find:
    • Stream URL (starts with rtmp://)
    • Stream Key (a long string of characters)

Important Security Notes

⚠️ Keep Your Stream Key Private!
  • Never share your stream key publicly
  • Don't include it in screenshots or videos
  • If your key is compromised, you can reset it in YouTube Studio
